Original story:

The Surrey RCMP is asking for the public’s help in locating a wanted 24-year-old man.

Haitam Maher is wanted after fleeing and allegedly assaulting a police officer with a weapon during a traffic stop in Sept. 2023, Mounties say.

On Sept 7, 2023, Haitam Maher was spotted dangerously driving his white 2017 Range Rover through Surrey during “peak traffic hours,” police say.

Police officers from the Surrey Gang Enforcement Team pulled Maher’s vehicle over.

“As officers approached the suspect vehicle, it allegedly drove forward into the police vehicle, almost striking an officer,” reads a Surrey RCMP release Thursday (Jan. 11). Maher drove away and struck multiple other vehicles as he fled.

“Thankfully, no one was injured during this incident,” said Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Cpl. James Mason.

Maher has been charged with assaulting a police officer with a weapon, fleeing the police, dangerous operation, failure to stop, and willfully resisting/ obstructing.

Maher is described as six-foot, 194 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Police are reminding the public if you see Maher or the 2017 white Range Rover with BC licence plate TK1 99L, to call 9-1-1 and not approach him.

Police ask anyone with information about Maher to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or visit solvecrime.ca.
