A 27-year-old has been charged with multiple counts of break-and-enter in connection to break-ins in Surrey and Burnaby, police say.

Gia Duong was arrested by police in Surrey on Nov. 9.

The Surrey RCMP say officers responded to a call of a suspected break-and-enter into a home in the 10100-block of 144A Street on Nov. 2. Police say cash and jewelry were stolen.

“Surrey RCMP Property Crime Target Team (PCTT) took over the investigation, as there were other break and enters in the area with similarities,” Cpl. Sarbjit Sangha stated in a press release Friday (Dec. 22). “PCTT was successful in identifying an individual who was involved in multiple break and enters in Surrey and Burnaby.”

Court documents show the incidents occurring between Oct. 28 and Nov. 9.

Duong is also charged with robbery, possession of stolen property, trafficking stolen property and unauthorized use of a credit card, police say.

Duong remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court Friday (Dec. 22).

The stolen jewelry was recovered and returned to the rightful owner, police say.

Police are using the Regional Automated Property Identification Database (RAPID) to find the owners of the remaining stolen property.

“The searchable database automatically compares serial numbers against police databases to identify hits on stolen property,” Sangha added. “The RAPID program has given us a tool that becomes very useful when the owner has good descriptions, serial numbers or photos of their stolen items.”
