Ducklings saved from South Surrey storm drain by firefighters

All the ducklings were saved after a bystander spotted them and called for help

Calls in to Surrey's fire department will often lead to the safety of individuals, but Tuesday morning's call was a little unusual — yet successful all the same.

A group of little ducklings were spotted in a storm drain by local residents, who then called Surrey Fire Rescue to assist on June 10, a Facebook post from Surrey Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 1271 reads.

All the ducklings were successfully saved from the storm drain by fire crews.

"Moments like these remind us of the importance of community and the readiness of our team to respond, no matter the situation. Here’s to making Surrey a safer and kinder place for all its inhabitants — feathered friends included!" the post adds.

Surrey Fire's assistant chief Rich Bodnark confirmed the ducklings were found in the South Surrey area of 27 Avenue and 172 Street.

"It's a positive outcome (where) we were able to move the ducklings on to a member of animal control," Bodnark said.

According to reports, the mother duck went missing after she ran away from a cat.

"They waited and waited and waited, hoping she would return, and unfortunately, she did not return," the assistant chief added.

The ducklings are now safe and receiving care until the next steps are decided.

"It just shows the diversity of the fire services. ... This is one that's warming to the heart."
