A Calgary youth has been charged with attempted murder related to a shooting in Newton on April 17, 2023.

One man was injured in the late afternoon shooting in the 14800 block of 76 Avenue. Shots were fired at a vehicle and a white van took off from the scene. Police later found a white van on fire at 147 Street and 69 Avenue.

In July, police announced the first suspect had been charged. Akoch Piot, 19, was charged with attempted murder, arson, discharging a firearm, and possessing a prohibited weapon and ammunition.

In a news release Tuesday (Jan. 16), police stated a second suspect had been arrested and charged. The BC Prosecution Service charged the male youth on Dec. 14 with attempted murder, discharging a firearm, arson, and possessing a prohibited loaded firearm.

Cpl. James Mason told the Now-Leader that the arson charge is connected to the burned van.

Police say the youth was arrested in Calgary by local police on Dec. 14 and was transferred back to B.C., where he remains in custody.

“The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit is notifying the public there are no outstanding suspects in relation to this investigation,” reads the release.
